Workshop Introduction

This five day thirty hour workshop is designed to give classroom teachers a good foundation in India and south Asia and to help them integrate this material into their classes.  The workshop tries to follow the new social studies standards and provide the kind of material which teachers will be asked to teach about in these new or adapted courses.

The class will be taught by several different experts in the field of Indian and South Asia Studies and thus teachers will have the opportunity to interact with a variety of faculty members.

The workshop is limited to 30 participants who will be chosen on a first come, first served basis.  Each participant will receive copies of a course textbook and additional materials chosen by the instructors.  The workshop is free of charge to all teachers but pre-registration is required.  The program is open to all teachers (K-12) and graduate education students.

Each teacher will be asked to create a teaching module or lesson plan in India/south Asia during the course.  These will be handed in on the last day, put on a CD, and distributed to everyone at the end of the workshop so that all participants will have a repertoire of lesson plans on various aspects of Indian history, culture, and society.
